Song Share: Surrounded (Fight My Battles) by Upper Room

I’m sure you have heard snippets of this song by Upperroom. Fight my battles was put out in June of 2017 and somehow took over the worship community by storm. A few months after it’s release, it was sang by Josh Baldwin at Bethel and even Michael W. Smith picked it up and recorded it. I’ve not seen a song, that really wasn’t even a complete song, get so much coverage. If you have heard the song, this of course is no surprise. The song is literally from heaven.

A couple of months ago, nearing the end of the August, Upperoom released the full version of the song, which to me takes everything to another level. So full of revelation. It is steeped in scripture and carries such a presence. Every time I hear it, it’s an instant praise party!

The song confirms the reality that there are issues we face in this life. That feeling like we are surrounded and being swallowed up by a myriad of circumstances is not uncommon. We all face moments like this. In the midst of this, we have the opportunity to stand firm in faith. It is not easy, but we can do it by the strength that God himself provides for us.

One of the reasons there is a praise party that takes place when I hear this song is because it is drenched in truth. Take a look at the following scriptures and you will see what I mean. These are the scriptures that the lyrics are based on.

  • Psalm 23
  • 2 Kings 6:15-17
  • 2 Chronicles 20:20-21

Meditating on scripture is one way to draw near to God, to renew our minds, and to build faith in our hearts. SINGING the scripture, does and even deeper work I believe. Something happens in the spirit when we declare His truth with our mouth in song. There is a reason why King David and King Jehoshaphat (amongst others) put such emphasis on worship! Remember the story of the walls of Jericho. God is likely trying to teach us something.

Take a moment to listen to listen to how Fight My Battles became a song. See if you are not blown away! Process can be so beautiful.  It’s funny that something created in such a “regular” moment could go on to rock the Christian community at large. I’m encouraged that my regular moments can one day have a mighty influence as well. That those moments of hiddenness and just showing up are not in vain but have a purpose in the greater picture. That moments, when I feel I got nothing, all I really need, I already have. He has already prepared me!

There is something so profound, so beautiful that happens when a song is birthed in a moment of spontaneous heart-overflow. I’ve always loved the idea of prophetic worship: hearing what the Lord is saying over his people and then singing it out. Also, when God orchestrates a song in a moment like he did in the video above, heaven literally rides on the wings of the sound. Hearts are set free, minds are renewed. Something changes.

Here is the full length song of Surrounded (Fight My Battles) by Upperrom. Take a moment to listen and meditate on the lyrics. Remember that whatever has got you confused, perplexed, angry, stuck, whatever battle just won’t end in your life and seemingly is trying to take you out, REMEMBER you are actually more surrounded by GOD! His army surrounds you and nothing can come against that. It may feel like it’s hopeless, it may look like it’s doomed, but the truth is what is true!  Ask the Lord to open your eyes and give you His heavenly perspective. Find a safe place in Him, He is waiting patiently for you to come close. Even if you have to fight with all you’ve got to believe He is for you, DO IT! It is the one battle you can control the outcome of and ever worth fighting!

Lyrics:
There’s a table that You’ve prepared for me

In the presence of my enemies
It’s Your body and Your blood You shed for me
This is how I fight my battles

repeat

I believe You’ve overcome
And I will lif my song of praise for what You’ve done

This is how I fight my battles
This is how I fight my battles
This is how I fight my battles
This is how

repeat

In the valley I know that You’re with me
Surely Your goodness and Your mercy follow me
My weapons are praise and thanksgiving
This is how I fight my battles

guitar worship

I believe You’ve overcome
And I will lift my song of praise for what You’ve done

This is how I fight my battles
This is how I fight my battles
This is how I fight my battles
This is how

repeat

It may look like I’m surrounded but I’m surrounded by You
It may look like I’m surrounded but I’m surrounded by You
It may look like I’m surrounded but I’m surrounded by You
It may look like I’m surrounded but I’m surrounded by You
It may look like I’m surrounded but I’m surrounded by You
It may look like I’m surrounded but I’m surrounded by You
It may look like I’m surrounded but I’m surrounded by You

repeat

There you have it. Let me know in the comments how Fight My Battles has blessed you!
